Can a Recruiter Swap Sectors and Disciplines

Can a Recruiter Swap Sectors and Disciplines As a Rec2Rec, one of the most commonly talked about subjects is whether a recruiter can cross over from one sector or discipline into another. Having done this myself on three occasions (I started out in white collar perm engineering then moved into a new desk for advertising agencies, before setting up a R2R desk) I am naturally an advocate of recruiters having the potential to move across to a new sector if they so wish.  However this seems to be a topic which literally divides opinion more than anything else in my daily job! I want to explore both arguments and then ask you for your opinions as to which you believe is right for you/your business or just generally speaking. Recruitment consultants CAN move into a new sector: If you are a capable true “360” recruiter: (ie. you are accomplished at picking up the phone and actually creating new and developing business relationships yourself) then that skill can surely be applied to any environment if you have the essential behaviour of a “hunter”. If a successful recruiter wants to leave their current role:  sometimes it is because they are bored and want to develop their own skills further. So by moving into a new sector, this creates an exciting new challenge for them to replicate their success but in a new arena. The relationships that you gain during the span of a recruitment job in one sector can be leveraged in other ways: for example, if you have been placing sales staff into commerce but you want to move into HR recruitment, you can utilise the existing contacts you already have. If a recruiter is involved in a vertical market: and that sector begins to struggle, as we all know this CAN and does happen (look at retail, property, financial services in 2008/9!) then the previously successful recruiter can do little to change it, their skills are not the problem and they can surely return to those relationships when the market recovers- which it obviously has done. Recruitment Consultants CAN’T move from one sector to another: The added value component:  Without the existing relationships and networks within a sector, the recruiter comes with a price tag and regrettably may cost a recruitment company more if they have to effectively start from scratch with no proven track record in the new sector. A costly trainee? There is no guarantee that a recruiter who has been successful in one market will be in another: It can be “horses for courses” can’t it- a very technically focused recruiter, for example, one who places contract IT developers is not going to necessarily be as agile when it comes to headhunting for HR Managers or Sales Directors et al which are equally personality driven. Once bitten twice shy. If a previous hire has cost a recruitment company money because the recruiter couldn’t transfer over, it’s a case of “tarnished with the same brush” and how could any recruiter possibly make the successful move. Having done R2R for a long time (well, since 2003 and 2005 for myself…!) I can honestly say that on the whole, if the recruiter has the desire to move into a new sector and they are moving into a company that is supportive, has a collaborative culture over sharing information on clients, sector specifics (such as jargon and market drivers) and trends, then the move tends to be very successful. Where it isn’t a successful transfer is where the recruiter in question is left to fend for themselves, with no-one taking the mentoring role in relaying their sector wisdom to them. I don’t want to use the world “selfish”……… Ultimately (and I know this may be contentious), you can dress some recruitment sectors and jobs up in lots of fancy titles etc, but we ALL do the same role and so if the mechanics are the same, or at least similar, then SURELY it IS possible to move over?! Recruitment is not rocket science let’s face it- and as half the battle is desire and ability, then surely the easiest part to teach someone is the industry aspect. What do you think? Have you transferred from one sector to another? Perhaps you have built your own hiring model on taking recruiters from one background and moulding them into your niche market? I would love to hear your experiences and share them with everyone. Whatever happens, I always say, base any hiring decision on an individual basis and please don’t rule by the “one size fits all” mentality as we all know, it doesn’t!

Protecting What Matters to You

Protecting What Matters to You Life is a funny thing. We go through it, and we grow attached to things. We find things to rely on, to benefit from, to gain satisfaction from. The funny thing about life, though, is that none of these things are guaranteed. We can’t always keep what we want. We don’t have ultimate control. Coping with this ideathat we don’t have ultimate controlis the first step in living a better life. Plenty of people go through life choosing to be in denial, never admitting that they don’t have control. Instead, they control harder. They manipulate more. They gain money and power, tricking themselves into thinking that they can buy security. In reality, none of us have perfect control, and we have to come to terms with that to become individuals at peace. Once we’ve acknowledged that we don’t have ultimate control, our life takes a different direction. On the one hand, this revelation will help us relax. It will help us appreciate and value the things we currently do have in life. Instead of living with a false sense of security and ignoring important relationships and opportunities because they will “always be there,” we can wake up everyday with a glorious sense of gratitude. Just the fact that we have legs and can see is enough to start our day with a bound of joy. Realizing that everything is a gift is a great way to stay grateful for our current situation. One the other hand, that revelation that we don’t have ultimate control will help us wise up. Instead of ignoring potential problems with blinders on, afraid to even think about that loss of control, we’re now able to face it. Some things in life can, and should, be protected. For example, if you’re the owner of a company that owns business vehicles, whether you live in Maine or California, you’ll want to have a lawyer on hand for any commercial truck accidents. Protecting your crews and your company means getting proper defense. Another thing we can now protect is our data. An amazing beacon of hope in the internet age, you can now have your sensitive information tracked by a data protection company, making sure it never shows up where it shouldn’t. That’s a huge relief, and it’s encouraging to see protection catching up to internet technology. Whether you choose to focus first on protecting what matters to you, or meditating on the value of everyday life, realizing your ultimate lack of control can be a huge gift. You don’t have to worry anymore about how you’re going to hold it all togetherbecause you’ve realized you can’t. And that’s okay. A lack of ultimate control inspires gratitude in all of us, and it’s the first step in living a healthier life.

How to be a better friend, even when youre busy

How to be a better friend, even when youre busy The best time for people with Aspergers to throw a party for their friends is Passover.  Passover is a very long meal where Jewish people follow prescribed conversations and eating rituals. No unstructured socializing. Which means people with Aspergers can have all their friends around with minimal social anxiety.  Plus, done well, Passover is a Jewish drinking game.   So Melissa and I spend a lot of time putting together the perfect guest list for Passover. And it looks like my  house is full of friends and family and we are so high functioning. And then Passover ends and Melissa and I  have to sleep for three days. Well, Melissa sleeps, because shes an introvert. I write blog posts, because Im an extrovert. The people who are closest to me find out about my life from reading my blog. Except Melissa. Melissa has the password to my email account, so she finds out about me by noting the emails I should have sent but did not send. You can tell a lot about a person by reading their emails.  And this is a good article about how you cannot tell a lot about a person from their emojis; emojis that you think will look happy can actually look sad on someone elses screen. That article is a great primer on how it feels to have Aspergers. Its about how you think you are sending non-verbal messages about one emotion but you are really sending them about another emotion. People talk about how they love a culture of candor, but actually, the world is full of non-verbal rules, and I dont see how anyone could possibly say they want a culture of candor because people with Aspergers are always getting in trouble for their candor. The reason I stop wanting to have friends is people say they like candor and then they dont like candor. Like the title of this post (which I stole from Fast Company but their article sucked, inspiring me to write my own) is BS because people are not too busy for their friends. People are too busy for their non-friends. Im never too busy for Melissa. Im just too busy hating myself to pick up the phone when she calls. But she knows she can always text. Plus, I bet she likes that better because she told me that her bitmoji is more Melissa than Melissa. My thirteen-year-old son, has Aspergers and I dont want him to have all the problems Ive had. So I tell him all the time to not be rude. And not to interrupt people to tell them a joke. Even though I do that all the time. Dont lecture to people when they are sick of you, I tell him. Even though I think I might do that with journalists all the time when they  want a quote from me for their article and I tell them, instead, why their article topic is dumb. Please god, help me to shut up. Thats what Im thinking. But when god doesnt answer, I think I should just not talk to people. Its better. Like how I need to stop telling my son  how to reform himself because when you criticize people you make them less likely to want to change. This is why I think it is right for god to just help me to follow social rules. Because I dont see another way for me to follow them besides an act of god. If I dont criticize hell never learn. I have a driver to take us to cello now, so I dont have a nervous breakdown, and my contacts were hurting me, and  I dont have to drive, so I just threw them out. And then I couldnt see, (which is surprising because I dont remember being blind without my contacts,) and then I realized that I feel more freedom to talk when I cant see, because I am not held back by visual feedback from other people. Its like being super-autistic or something. I found myself sort of just being in my own world and hoping people were reacting the way Id hope  them to at any given moment. People with Aspergers are alone a lot, but we love being with people. If it would just not be so hard. I dont look at peoples faces because Im so anxious that if I know what they are feeling I will have too much anxiety over trying to make them happy. So I just look away.  Melissa and I dont look at each other when we talk unless its to criticize my choice of clothing. This research proves that everything Im saying is right. Which makes me happy. Researches report in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience: A  theory of autistic children that I have become recently interested in: In autistic adults the amygdala, which is for emotional responding, is smaller. It has been hypothesized that smaller amygdala equals poor social skills. The interesting bit is that autistic children who are hyper sensitive to stimulus have humongous amygdalae. This indicates they are hyper sensitive to social input (i.e. looking at someone in the eye is hard and habituation to familiar faces does not happen). This hypersensitivity makes them ignore social input at a young age and the amygdala therefore does not develop and they do not form the social skills common in non-autistics. Conclusion:  I might be the nicest person you know. Do you think this accidentally morphed into a  post about  how to understand the people with Aspergers in your life? Let me get back on track with this: In 1985 most people said they had three good friends. Now people say they have zero friends. I think its probably semantic. Like, if you dont have friends, then lower the bar for what a friend is. And then you have some. Melissa is my friend who  only has dinner parties with me when there is prescribed socializing and mandatory drinking in the name of God. And she only does conversations with me when we are not looking. Ask yourself: Whats your definition of a friend?

3 Career Solutions In A World Where Everyone Has A Degree

3 Career Solutions In A World Where Everyone Has A Degree Most of us will remember Labour’s announcement of its goal to get 50% of young people into higher education (ie. university), which was more than eight years ago. Last year, that figure got as close as it ever has done; the high education initial participation rate (HEIPR) hit 49.3% a significant rise from 42.5% since records began in 2006. With the latest statistics, released at the end of last year by the Office of National Statistics, revealing that 38% of the UK workforce have a degree it’s becoming unbelievably competitive. Whether the job market is being saturated with degrees is something that’s been heavily debated on both sides (for and against) ever since Labour’s 50% target was set, but one thing is clear â€" having a degree is not always enough, and this latest post runs through some alternative paths for those who don’t want to take the HE route. 1. Join A Growing, Alternative Sector It sounds really obvious, but you need to think outside the box â€" especially if you’re not sure where you’d like your career to take you. Regardless of what work we’ve done already, we all have a number of skills which are transferrable to other industries â€" so just because you’ve worked in PR for two years, doesn’t mean you won’t be able to break through into something totally different. A great tip is to try and break into an industry which is showing signs of growth â€" demand for employees in these industries will be higher, and employers will be willing to snap up more workers. Given the recent economic climate, it can be difficult to see how this would be the case but in this period of increasing recovery there are a number of emerging industries showing consistent and promising growth. Construction is one example; it’s been growing consistently for almost a year and a half without faltering, and this month hit its fastest growth in seven months. It’s a great industry to get stuck into, whether you’re unsure about your career path or want to change your direction, given the sheer variety of roles involved â€" from hands-on construction jobs to site management, finance and marketing. Specialist recruiters, like PSR Solutions, can offer better advice on how to get into a growing industry and get yourself much sought-after job security. 2. Start Your Own Business; Be Your Own Boss It can be frustrating to keep getting turned away from interviews for your dream job; despite knowing you can do it exceptionally well, there’s just too much competition. So if you’re struggling to get into the industry you love, why not become part of it instead? Figures of self-employed people and those registering new businesses are, as of 2014, at their highest, with a 367,000 rise in four years since the start of 2011 â€" hitting 14% of all the 29.4 million people in employment. In fact, self-employment in the UK is at its highest than at any point over the last 40 years. If you know your field, know you’re great at it and just need a chance to prove yourself then self-employment can be a great way to break through. If you’re able to work online from home then this can keep the running costs down, whereas working on a consultancy basis can give you the chance to work with bigger companies rather than trying to compete against them. 3. Apprenticeships Experience While the uptake in university degrees is steadily increasing, there has also been an enormous surge in those taking up apprenticeships to gain an alternative qualification and get that all-important hands on experience employers are so hungry for. A whopping 860,000 people were on an apprenticeship by the end of 2013; a rise of more than 130% since 2010. This makes for a fantastic opportunity if you’re not set on grabbing a degree, and just want to get stuck in with some experience. The Daily Mail ran a piece earlier this year (which you can read here) looking at the benefits of current apprenticeship schemes in the UK and showing that they’re not limited to vocational industries â€" law, management and PR are among their success stories.

Technology Opens Employment Doors to Aspiring Artists

Technology Opens Employment Doors to Aspiring Artists 0 Flares 0 Flares “The starving artist” is a cliche component of virtually every argument against pursuing an education in the liberal arts. “There’s no employment”, “when you do find work it’ll be for peanuts”, “will that $75k education make you a better bartender?” Anyone with any dreams aimed towards a creativity-based career is undoubtedly told these points over and over. But what these naysayers  arent  taking into account is how  much creative thought goes into much of what we see today online and in software where the big money can be found. Artist 2.0 It’s true those seeking a career strictly in sculpture or the study of 12th-century bookbinding are going to have a bad time in today’s job market. Fortunately the path to finding a way to incorporate these interests into a high salary lies literally at your fingertips. The digital realm is where the frontiers of professional creativity exist today. A fascination with sculpture can lead you to a career in 3D-modeling for movies and games. A niche appreciation for illuminated manuscripts can be your launchpad for professional graphic design. The Right Time and Place High-paying employment opportunities for creative people have never been this plentiful. It’s the perfect time to get cracking on a career in the digital arts. But are you in the right place? The digital playground covers the globe but truth be told the equipment all still gets made at the same handful of places. It’s important to go where the culture and environment caters to technological creativity. This is true of both school and work. Studying digital graphic design in Flint, Michigan is better than not pursuing an education at all. But its important to be where the opportunities are. California the world capital of tech is probably the smartest place to establish yourself in the digital design world. Its a certainty that Platt,  a San Diego college, will have a much larger network of online marketing professionals than other places because of the citys major role in the industry. The same dynamic exists in the Bay area, only more towards the social media end of the tech spectrum. The Future The growing demand for digital artists is only going to increase as we get further into the 21st century. This is a reflection of the fact that the “spaces” we’re spending the majority of our time in are increasingly virtual. It isnt bombastic to assume within a decade there will be classrooms where the majority if not the entirety of the lesson plan is delivered in a virtual, digital way. In the world of media, it’s a guarantee that even your more modest local programs will be produced with a heavy hand toward the digital makeup. Don’t file away your fantasy of making a living as a painter, sculptor, calligrapher, or decorator just because someone is telling you how impossible it will be to pay the bills and get fed. There are a growing number of well-paying opportunities for these skill sets to flourish.  Just know that you may be painting, sculpting, and designing in code. You may also find yourself leaving an old home behind to make a new one where the jobs are. Truly creative spirits will be ready and willing to take on the challenges to have their skills translate into solid careers.

Types of Credit Your Small Business Could Benefit From

Types of Credit Your Small Business Could Benefit From Starting your own small business and becoming your own boss comes with a whole host of benefits for you as an individual. You gain complete control over your working life, choosing your working hours, deciding what types of products or services you want to offer and work with, and deciding who you work with (whether this means choosing business partners or having the final say on members of staff you choose to employ). But with this freedom comes great responsibility. Perhaps one of the most significant responsibilities you’re likely to take on is managing your small business’ finances. Now, generally speaking, you’re going to want to keep your business in the black as much as possible. After all, nobody wants to be in debt. So it may come across as surprising when someone suggests that you should seriously consider taking out different types of credit for your projects and progression. But the truth is that engaging with credit can significantly boost both your personal and pr ofessional credit scores, leading to better future opportunities for your business’ expansion and consequent success. So, here are just a couple of types of credit that you might want to consider taking out to help your business along the way! Business Line of Credit A business line of credit works in a similar way to credit cards that you may have engaged with in the past. This type of loan is generally employed when you come up against unforeseen costs or to help meet your business’ short terms requirements and goals. You will generally take out a business line of credit with an official financial institution such as a bank or a specialist lender in the area. A first meeting will help you to come to an agreement on the maximum amount that you can borrow at any one time. This will then be available to you as and when you need it as long as you don’t exceed your agreed limit! Leasing and Hire Purchase Many startups are shocked to find that the equipment or machinery that they may need in order to run their business successfully comes with a higher price tag than they anticipated. But the good news is that you don’t necessarily have to put off your projects or ventures in order to save, or take out a loan for the sake of purchasing what you need. You can often participate in leasing and hire purchase. This is an arrangement between someone who already owns what you need and yourself. You pay them to use their equipment. This is particularly beneficial for start ups, as you may change your mind about what types of products you want to provide. If this happens, you can simply cancel your hire rather than having to sell a bought piece of equipment and potentially lose profit. These are just two types of credit that could prove profitable for your business. But there are other options out there. So do your research and find the best type of loan to suit your professional needs!
